In October of 2008, I had a prophetic dream where I was visited by my deceased grandfather. In the dream, he told me that I needed to acquire a piece of property in a specific area on the Big Island here in Hawaii. As strange as it seemed at that time, I felt strongly compelled to follow his supernatural guidance. (This is the super short version of the story. If you ever see me and want to know the full story, ask me. I’d love to tell you. It’s pretty trippy.) Anyway, in February of 2009, I purchased 6 acres of VERY raw land in the upper Puna area of Big Island (Hilo side). I’ve been working (slowly) on developing this property ever since. This has been one of the biggest life changing experiences for me, and has prompted me to explore new ways of living on this earth as a human being.
Initially, my plan was to plant a bunch of exotic palms and cash out on it one day. But plans have changed and now I have, what I feel to be, the more promising and fulfilling mission of growing FOOD on this land. I’m much more stoked on this idea! I’ve since come to learn more and more about permaculture and food forests. I’m moving forward to develop this land into a fully sustainable permaculture site. Furthermore, I’d really like to see this place become a demo-farm and learning center where people can come learn sustainable food growing practices and experience them first hand. Ultimately, I feel like a steward of the land (i think we all should feel this way) with the responsibility of leaving it better than I found it. I learn more and more every day. Here’s where I’m at right now and a little of what it’s taken to get there.
